Travel is better when you know where your people are
A new city feels different when you know where the queer bars, cafés and community spaces are. Whether you are on a weekend break, a work trip or a long backpacking adventure, a little planning helps you feel at home faster and stay safer.
Check local laws and attitudes before you go
Laws and social attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people differ widely between countries, and sometimes between cities in the same country. Before you book, read your government's official travel advice for your destination. It usually covers local laws, safety and what to do if something goes wrong.
It is also worth reading recent experiences from LGBTQ+ travelers and local community groups, which often give a more day-to-day picture than official sources.
Find the gayborhood and queer-friendly venues
Many cities have a neighborhood where LGBTQ+ bars, clubs and cafés cluster, plus queer-friendly spots spread across town. Start with a local guide, then ask staff and locals where they like to go. Our city guides cover:
Plan around Pride (or avoid the crowds)
Pride season is one of the best times to visit many cities, with parades, parties and community events everywhere. It is also the busiest and most expensive. Book early if you want to be in the middle of it, or travel just before or after for a calmer trip with the same welcoming feel.
Choose a welcoming place to stay
Look for hotels and rentals that say they welcome LGBTQ+ guests, and read reviews from other queer travelers. Staying near the gayborhood makes it easy to get home after a night out. If you are sharing a room with a partner, it can help to check how the place handles that in advance.
Meet locals and other travelers
Locals know the best spots, from the quiet café where everyone goes on Sunday to the party that is not on any list. Community groups, walking tours, sports meetups and queer events are easy ways to meet people. Apps that show communities and places, not only dating, help you plug into the local scene before you even arrive.

A quick pre-trip checklist
- Read your government's official travel advice for your destination.
- Save local emergency numbers and the address of your embassy or consulate.
- Bookmark the city's LGBTQ+ neighborhood, a couple of welcoming bars or cafés, and a community center if there is one.
- Share your itinerary and where you are staying with a friend back home.
- Check that your travel insurance covers you, and keep copies of important documents somewhere safe.
- Look up Pride dates and big community events, so you can either join in or plan around them.
Stay discreet where you need to
In places where it may not be safe to be openly queer, it is okay to keep a lower profile. Be thoughtful about public displays of affection, the photos you post and the apps you use. Keep a friend updated on your plans, and save local emergency numbers before you go. Our dating safety tips and safety page have more advice.
